Explore the most famous dyke
What you can't ignore in the centre of Volendam is, of course, the Dike. It is perhaps the most famous dyke in the Netherlands. You'll find the souvenir shops and restaurants there, as well as the photographers. They are located near each other and opposite each other, so together they immediately create a very special atmosphere.
Tip: it is the tourist centre and therefore a busy place. So do you still want to have some space there and walk around at your leisure? Make sure you get there early.
And do you look a little further than the souvenirs, the amazing photos in costume and all the goodies on sale? The buildings themselves on the Dike are also incredibly worthwhile. They are beautiful to look at, because of the beautiful gables you don't see in many places in the Netherlands anymore. They are wooden and beautifully finished in detail. Moreover, there is a lot of use of colourful flowers, although you sometimes have to look closely at them among the billboards to attract tourists.
Tip: From the Dike, you can walk straight to the harbour. This is both an important source of employment and a great place to enjoy together. At least check out the Volendam kwaks there. These are the fishing boats, which they naturally use to haul eels and other fish onto land.

It is only a few minutes' walk away and is at least as beautiful. Yet you will encounter far fewer tourists there because it is not so well known.
Walk away from the Dike and dive into the village. The small streets make it a kind of maze. You can't really get lost there, fortunately, as you will always end up back on the Dike and at the harbour.
