You start after arriving in Volendam with a short walk to the famous Dijk. Want to know where best to park your car parking? After a short walk during which you can admire the typical Volendam houses with pointed days and wooden facades, you will arrive at Volendam's cosy harbour. You will receive a warm welcome at Café Restaurant De Dijk located at Haven 108. Here you will be served a nice cup of coffee or tea with a delicious homemade apple pie. From this restaurant, you will have a beautiful view of the Volendam harbour and get acquainted with the cosy atmosphere that always prevails in Volendam.
After a short walk along the Volendam Dike, you will arrive at the departure point of the boat to Marken, at the Volendam Marken Express. Here you'll board and, depending on the weather, you can either sit inside or enjoy the deck outside. In both cases, you'll have beautiful views over the village of Volendam and the Gouwzee. There is also a bar on board where you can get a nice snack or drink.
After the approximately 30-minute boat trip, you will arrive at Marken and have the opportunity to explore this harbour village. Walk from the harbour into the village and stroll past the characteristic wooden houses on stilts. All the little streets are equally photogenic which certainly makes it possible to shoot the perfect picture! Note; people live in these cottages, so be careful not to cause any nuisance.
Besides the typical Marker houses, it is also fun to discover the church quarter with its beautiful little wooden houses and white bridges. You can also visit the Marker museum to see traditional costumes. On the other side of the village is another real clog farm where you can experience the craft of clog making. Finally, there is also the Sijtje Boes experience the viewing house where you can experience how it used to be to live on Marken.
Besides a nice walk, you will have the opportunity to have lunch on one of the cosy terraces in the harbour of Marken. While you enjoy your lunch, you will already see the boat approaching to take you back to Volendam. Board in time not to miss it and make the crossing back to Volendam.
When you get back to Volendam, head to Photographer Volendam for a fun experience; namely, the photo in Volendam costume.
Here, after a warm welcome, you will be dressed up as a real Volendammer/Volendam. The skirts and trousers will just be put on over your current clothes, so it will all be easy and quick. After you also have the traditional head decoration and necessary jewellery on, you can pick out clogs in your size. Finally, you will be positioned in a typical Volendam setting. Will you choose the harbour or the Volendam living room? And then; have a laugh!
Then you are helped to take everything off again and you can wait for about 15 minutes for your photo to roll off the presses. The end result is there. The nicest souvenir to take home as a reminder of your visit to Volendam.
