Discover the best cycling routes around Volendam

If you want to explore the Volendam area, there are several cycling routes you can take. We have collected some nice cycling routes around Volendam for you

Cycling route Volendam, Katwoude, Monnickendam, Marken and back by boat (17km)

The cycling route from Volendam to Marken is by far the most popular cycling route in the Volendam area. This cycle route has a distance of about 18 kilometres and has everything the Netherlands is known for on one route. As soon as you cycle out of Volendam, you come across a windmill. You will then ride along the dyke of Katwoude towards Monnickendam. During this route you will pass the cheese farm of the Willig family, where you can visit the cheese dairy and the stable with the calves for free. The route then continues to Monnickendam. Here you can enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants at the harbour of this small town.

From Monnickendam, you pedal towards Marken. As you cycle along the dyke, you look out over the Gouwzee on the left and over the meadows with their many horses and cows on the right. As you get closer to Marken, you can even see Lelystad in the distance when the weather is nice.

Once you arrive at Marken, we really recommend visiting the lighthouse the Horse of Marken for some stunning photos. Then cycle to the harbour for a drink on the terrace overlooking the historic harbour. If you have enough energy you can cycle back, but it's also great fun to take the Marken Express catching boat back to Volendam

Cycling route Volendam and Edam (6.5 km)

Have less time to spare? Then take the cycling route from Volendam to Edam. From Volendam, you can easily take the bike towards Edam. The most beautiful and easiest way is to leave the Julianalaan towards the dike between Edam and Volendam. The cycle route is very simple to take but still beautiful. At the end of the dike, you arrive in Edam. Here you will find a beautiful little sluice. Once you pass this, take the first bridge on the right and then immediately turn left. Follow this road along the water and you will end up in the centre of Edam. Here you will find all kinds of unique little shops that you won't find anywhere else. From the centre you will find various routes to get back to Volendam.

 

Cycle route Volendam, Purmerend, Zaanse Schans (48km)

If you really want to do a challenging cycling tour, set course for the Zaanse Schans from Volendam. From Volendam, you have the option of cycling first to Monnickendam and then to Purmerend. Alternatively, you can go to Edam first and then take the cycle route to Neck. Via Neck, you can easily cycle to Zaanse Schans.
