Do you already know Experience Volendam? It is a great attraction for visitors of all ages. With VR glasses, you can watch and experience, while sitting in a boat, what the inhabitants of Volendam experienced during the Zuiderzee flood of 1916. The impressive VR images portray the violent storm that made the Netherlands decide to seal off and drain the Zuiderzee. You can use your VR glasses to look 360 degrees around in Volendam's past. Prior to the VR experience, you get a presentation by a lady in Volendam costume. She tells a lot about the traditional clothing in the past and how people lived and worked in Volendam a hundred years ago. You can also visit an old Volendam street from a hundred years ago. Afterwards, you can have fun photos taken of yourself in traditional costume in the studio.

The story behind the Zuiderzee flood

During the Zuiderzee flood, after a few days of strong winds, the storm surged at a speed of over 100 kilometres per hour. As it had been storming for several days, the water level of the Zuiderzee had already reached a very high level. This violent storm therefore caused a lot of material damage on the island of Marken, which with its low quays was barely protected. Fishing boats were thrown onto the quay and a number of islanders were unfortunately unable to flee. The floods caused as many as 16 deaths on the island. Dykes on the mainland were also completely swept away in the area around Edam, Broek in Waterland and Durgerdam. Everything there was completely flooded.
