What is the eelsound?

Eelsound is a term coined by disc jockey Joost den Draaijer. Name of the museum is of course directly derived from it. The chosen term palingsound obviously has to do with eel fishing and eel smoking in Volendam. However, the smooth-sounding music also prompted the use of the term. Volendam music is very popular in our country. Did you know that most of the hits from the Dutch top forty were scored by our own Volendammers and not by Abba, Madonna, Michael Jackson, the Beatles or Rolling Stones? Volendam music has been achieving international successes for forty years and that is truly special. That's why a visit to this museum is really worthwhile.

The Palingsound museum can be found in the attic of the widely known restaurant Smit Bokkum. At this excellent restaurant you will also find a demonstration of owner Jan Smit's eel smokehouse. You can also enjoy a drink on the cosy seaside terrace at this nice restaurant. In the garden at Paviljoen Smit Bokkum, you will also find a number of works by artist Rob Cerneüs from Monnickendam. His artworks consist of bronze and stone and have a recurring element: "warmth and tenderness". You will find his artworks in numerous communities in the area and they offer a unique view of the world. In short, at the palingsound museum there is much to experience!
